Double Sapphire for Elizabeth’s 90 years

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will turn 90 years of age on April 21st 2016 and after an amazing 64 years reign as Queen of England, Great Britain and the Commonwealth, she shows no sign of slowing down.

The Gemstone to mark a 90th Anniversay or 90th Birthday, is Double Sapphire. It will be interesting if the Palace or Britain gift Her Majesty with a Double Sapphire Gift (my personal 2nd favourite Gem, after Black Opal).

The Richelieu Sapphires (pictured in the earrings above), are amongst the highest priced sapphires ever sold.

The amazing cushion shaped sapphires, mined in Kasmir, India weigh 26.66 and 20.88 carats. They were sold by Sotheby’s Geneva in 2013 for $8,358 million.

The sapphires were owned by Odile de Richelieu, Countess Gabriel de La Rochefoucauld, Princess de La Rochefoucauld.

The sapphires were given a wedding gift to Odile de La Chapelle de Jumilhac de Richelieu on the Occassion of her marriage to Count Gabriel de la Rochefoucauld, Prince de La Rochefoucauld, in 1905. They were later mounted in earrings and it is believed that they were remounted (a second time) in the existing pair.
